I have organized a series of Local and Family History Talks, starting with one to be held on Friday, October 14th at 2pm, and which will have a title such as “MY FAMILY’S STORY: A TALE OF TWO PLANTATIONS. Note the change of title, because I will not have been to the US before the date of my talk.
This post is going to be updated, because I have had to postpone my visit to the US until towards the end of October. I will confirm that I shall be in Charleston from 24th until 31st October. The Monday Night Blues has been cancelled. I shall be at the MNB on Monday 24th October (East Bay Meeting House, 160 East Bay Street, Charleston at 8pm), but not the main speaker. I hope to see some of you there and later in the week. Wednesday (26th Oct) at 12pm I shall be at Prince George Winyah Episcopal Church in Georgetown just up the coast from Charleston. I’ll have the use of a rented car and so will be much more independent and flexible in terms of being able to get around. I’ll be staying with friends on James Island from the Monday until Friday (28th Oct). I cannot post here the programme of the visit. However, I hope to go down to Hilton Head for the day, and Magnolia Gardens and Drayton Hall for another day. I leave Charleston on Tuesday, 1st November.
I have been helping out at a local -”friendship”- club for the elderly since last December. I find I get more out it than I put in. They are a great bunch of people – all with a wealth of experience and amazing stories to tell. On one occasion as a speaker I told suitably appropriate jokes I’d found on the internet (or rather recited them!). The event was such a success that I’ve now been rung up by several of the local clubs to do the same thing and get a small payment for it. Read more
