Charlotte Forten Grimke

Charlotte is known for her connection as a teacher on St. Helena’s Island on liberated land during the Civil War. She was the daughter of James Forten, an African American, who established a successful sail-making business. Charlotte and Francis were married in 1878. They had a daughter, Theodore, who died in infancy.  Charlotte died in 1915.
