Family History Groups
On several occasions I have given a powerpoint presentation on the title of “From Slavery To Reconciliation”. The latest was for a local family history group. I had a small display of photographs and documents as well as books to illustrate my talk, so that people had an opportunity either before or after acquaint themselves more with the “story”. I found that the question and answer sessions were always very productive in terms of beginning a discussion or bringing ideas to the debate. Issues would emerge such as the way to research family history and the impact of slavery on slave-owning families as well as those of the enslaved. One question which was bound to come up was whether we should apologize for what our ancestors did according to their “lights”.
I should consider writing a book to accompany the talks.
